The demand for designer handbags remains strong, with about one third of the wealthy American shoppers surveyed buying designer handbags in the previous year, according to the Luxury Institute. The survey of shoppers with an average income of $300,000 a year and average net worth of $3.1 million found "Coach" designer handbags were the most familiar brand of designer handbags, recognized by 52 percent of respondents.
It's the label on the purse, not the price, that makes all the difference, according to the survey of wealthy shoppers. Price did not come into the equation even though designer handbags from luxury fashion houses such as Chanel, Prada and Gucci, can cost in the thousands of dollars, while "Coach "designer handbags generally cost hundreds of dollars.
